591. Moycullen

Moycullen lies 13 km northwest of Galway on the N59 to Clifden and, like barna and Claregalway, it is becoming a dormer area for the expanding city. Nearby is Drimcong House restaurant famous for its cuisine and a little further on at Ross Lake is Ross House, birthplace of Violet Martin. She wrote under the pen name of Martin Ross and with Edith Somerville penned the celebrated "Reminiscences of an Irish R.M." recently made into a very successful television eries. Although a gateway to the various trout angling centres on the western shore of Lough Corrib, Moycullen is also an ideal coarse angling centre with Ballyquirke and Ross Lakes just a cast away.

593. Oranmore

The village of Oranmore, just minutes from Galway City, nestles in Galway Bay, between the Burren, famous for its wonderful flora, and stunning Connemara. Oranmore, dominated by a splendid 12th century castle, is the gateway to Ireland's South West. It is a perfect spot from which to visit the Burren, Connemara, the Aran Islands, Galway City, and the Corrib and Lough Mask water systems. Its extra advantage is that Galway regional airport is right nearby, in neighbouring Carnmore.

Oranmore's olde worlde pubs are renowned for their impromptu music and dance sessions. Rinville Park, just outside the village, is an ideal family destination, while the superb Galway Bay Golf Course is nearby too. Oranmore is a lively town, with lots to offer.

594. Oughterard

The delightful village of Oughterard is the chief angling centre on Lough Corrib. A detour to the right in the village square will bring us by some of the most scenic shorelines of Lough Corrib.

After a journey of 13 km, the road stops rather abruptly opposite the wooded Hill of Doon.

There are breath-taking views here of the north eastern arm of Lough Corrib as it dramatically fades into the distance towards the mountains and valleys of Connemara. We return to Oughterard, taking the road to the right named 'scenic route', from where panoramic views of the lake are obtained again.
